Camping
Free dispersed camping on National Forest land: first-come, no reservations, 14-day limit. Developed USFS campgrounds are reservable at recreation.gov, including Soldier Creek (open about May 8 – Oct 11) and Currant Creek Campground at about 8,000 ft (open about June 5 – Sept 20). Aspen Grove is closed for 2026 and expected to reopen around May 2027.
- Camp 200+ ft from water and use existing sites
- Check fire restrictions at utahfireinfo.gov
- Pack it all out and treat all water
- Lock up food: this is bear country
- Cell service is spotty, so download maps first
Hiking
For anyone in your group who would rather hike, here are a few good ways to spend a day on foot:
- Currant Creek Trail · short out-and-back, 2.1 mi, starts near 8,000 ft
- Reservoir shoreline trail · moderate, about 11 mi point-to-point through sagebrush, aspen and pine
- Second Water & Fifth Water Loop · hard full-day loop, 18.9 mi, past Fifth Water Hot Springs
- Heart Lake ridge hike, Uintas · hard out-and-back, 12.5 mi, remote and quiet
